Once the umbilical chord is cut we are for all intents and purposes a singular entity, we remain so for the rest of our lives. During this time we make countless decisions all of which are related to the phenomena called emotion. Throughout history emotions have both brought us together and torn us apart, sometimes simultaneously.

Reason in our decisions is a factor, but what do we base our reasoning on? Emotional experience is the basis for all decisions. You wouldn’t jump off a bridge just because someone asked you to. No because you want to live, why? There are people and things you care about. You are being controlled by your emotions; some would say it was the instinct for survival.

The thought of going through life all by them selves is unnerving to some people. There is however something truly magical at work here, love, hate, and everything in between. Emotions are the element that gives life its substance.

“Soulataire” metaphorically illustrates decision making in action. Present day is the ace of spades, which turns into part of the table. Clubs is symbolic of family matters, a saluting soldier in this case represents any person totally dedicated to their job while neglecting family and friends. Smoke trailing from the edge of the card, which is partially burned, signifies the love that sometimes lingers around a decision of the heart. A case in point perhaps a Fathers abandonment of a family, which is then held together by a son’s love in spite of the abandonment by the Father.

The Queen of Hearts pleads with the player not to discard her. A little girl emerges from the Queen of Diamonds playing innocently, totally unaware of her erasure Diamonds in this context represent anything or anyone that is the result of a union of love. An empty box of playing cards spills out and becomes part of the beach where the little girl plays lost in the sands of time if you will. Money acquired and spent throughout our lives is never really part of life itself but never the less necessary for our survival.
