I have often wondered why people pierce various parts of their bodies. My curiosity of these phenomena led me to several conclusions. Before starting a new piece of Philoism I will think through the topic that I am addressing sometimes making lists as to the pros and cons of the subject. “ A Piercing Question” was arrived at more by my visual explorations than my writing down of theories. After drawing two rectangular pieces of skin one of which I pierced the other I left in it’s original form, it occurred to me immediately that the piece of skin that was pierced was far more interesting to look at than the one that wasn’t.
Creativity is often in fact almost always born of a disturbance or destruction of an original form. When artists paint they are changing or destroying if you will the virgin surface of the substrate that they are working on. Individuals who decide to pierce their skin are in essence doing the same thing. When a person pierces any part of their body that can be viewed by others this act draws attention to the area creating a center of interest, which is exactly what artists do when they create works of art.
The hooks that are piercing the skin in this work are in the shape of Question marks creating a visual metaphor. Blood droplets represent the pain that comes of executing various works of art. Satin in the background I thought made a nice contrast yet similarity in form to the hooks within the piece, purple to me represents a reverence for all forms of creativity.
