Loons’ have always had a haunting yet appealing presence to me. Mystery also comes to mind as there are both physical and spiritual mysteries surrounding the Common Loon. Native people of Canada have woven rich tales of the Loon throughout their spirituality.

From a physical point of view, Loons’ have to take off from water due to their weight. I wondered why would a bird capable of flight be so heavy? After a little research I discovered that Loon's are solid boned, where as most birds are hollow boned, why because they dive to depths in excess of 200FT. to acquire their food, which consists of small fish, frogs, crayfish and the like. The Mother Loon and it’s young in my serigraph are just leaving their nest. I pictured the Mother Loon half way off to enable me to show more of the beautiful spotting on the underside of the bird.
